Things to do in Nepal

Nepal as a tourist hot spot offers many different activities to suit different tastes. If you are the adventure lover then Nepal is one place that offers you different terrains and different activities to make your holiday a memorable one.

You can choose from Trekking to River rafting to adventure biking. But if you want just a rest and recuperation holiday and enjoy the serene and sublime atmosphere of the Himalayas you can do that too.

Nepal, having the majestic Himalayas in the north offers the best trekking opportunities for tourists. People from all over the world are lured by the immense possibilities of trekking that the Nepali terrain provides. There are different types of trekking. Some of the more popular ones are the backpacking, the teahouse trekking, self-arranged trekking or trekking through tour operators.

No matter which kind you choose, the scenic beauty of the snow-clad mountains will never fail to impress you.

Some of the more popular areas of trekking are the Mount Everest region, the Annapurna region and the Solukhumbu. Trekking in the Mount Everest region starts at Jiri and reaches the base camp at an altitude of 5,450 mts. Trekking around the Arun River and Makalu base camp route are also popular with the tourists.

While September to October is excellent for trekking anywhere in Nepal, December to February is ideal for trekking upto 3000mts.

River rafting is another popular activity in Nepal as the country boasts of wild flowing rivers which pass through some of the most magnificent surroundings. River rafting also popularly known as White Water River Rafting is a sport which challenges one’s ability to steer against the river currents.

The rivers for rafting are graded according to their levels of difficulties on a scale of 1 to 6. Rivers with Grade 3 or below require no prior experience, so even first-timers and children can try them out. Rivers with Grade 4 and above are more popular with experienced river rafters.

Some of the more popular rivers for River rafting are the Kali Gandaki, which is Grade 4, River Trisuli, Grade 3+, and River Bhote Koshi Grade 4 to 5, River Sun Koshi which boasts of intense rapids.

River rafting is the third most popular activity in Nepal for tourists after mountaineering and trekking.

Adventure Biking is another popular sporting activity that is offered for tourists in Nepal. Since the Nepali terrain has both mountainous passes as well as flat lands it offers unique opportunity to bikers to test their skills. Some of the recommended routes for biking include the Kathamndu-Bhaktpur-Patan and Kathmandu-Pokhara-Tansel-Bhairahawa-Chiwan. Though the routes may be a bit busy they offer a first-hand view of the local population as well as the panoramic views of the Himalayas throughout.
